Food Waste tips – Gemma Lewis, The Pantri Box
I hate having to throw food away, so one really simple tip I always recommend is using glass storage containers for any fresh veg, fruit or prepared meals.
Storing them in a sealed container will help them to last longer in the fridge. But more importantly, being in glass means you can see at a glance what you’ve got, which means you’re less likely to forget about it and know not to add it to your shopping list.
It’s a simple idea, but really effective.
My other top tip is to keep some good soup recipes handy. Soup is a great way to use up any random leftover veg just with some simple herbs or species and some stock or water. My favourite at the moment is cauliflower soup made with coconut and cinnamon.
How you shop can also help. A zero waste shop is a great and easy way to not only reduce costs when shopping, but also reduce waste. The beauty of a refill shop is that you can just take what you need. This is especially useful if you’re cooking for one or trying out a new recipe. If you have a new recipe you can come in and we will even mix the exact amount of spices for you – really saving money, waste and time! No more finding old spice pots at the cask of the cupboard that are 10 years out of date!
